The China ProjectGallery of Modern Art 28 Mar - 28 Jun 2009The China Project encompasses three major exhibitions that highlight the Gallery’s long-term engagement with contemporary Chinese art.
‘Three Decades: The Contemporary Chinese Collection’ brings together for the first time the Gallery’s magnificent collection of works by Chinese contemporary artists from the 1980s to the present. The exhibition, which includes over 100 works by 50 artists, is augmented a major commission by Wang Qingsong and will premiere Ah Xian’s most recent body of work.
‘Zhang Xiaogang: Shadows in the Soul’ is a solo exhibition exploring the work of one of the foremost painters of the Chinese avant-garde. Many works are drawn from the artist’s own collection and the exhibition will include early works from the 1980s to the present. This is the first survey of his work in Australia.
‘William Yang: Life Lines’ presents works by one of Australia’s most respected and prominent photographers and performers. Through a series of portraits and personal objects, Yang’s works reflect upon his Chinese heritage and his experiences in Australia and China to provide an important local context for ‘The China Project’.
This free exhibition is open 10am – 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am – 5pm on weekends. There are also a number of free talks and lectures you can attend, giving you a greater insight into the work and the artists.
